Benefit & Tribute Gigs

THE EQUALiTY SHOW 1995

Eddie made an appearance in this benefit in aid of Stonewall's campaign for better treatment of homosexuals in the armed forces at the Royal Albert Hall on 22nd October, 1995. Kylie Minogue, Marc Almond and Janice Ian joined Elton John at the show and there were appearances from French & Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julian Clary, Lily Savage and Sandi Toksvig.

THE BiG SNOG

in aid of the World Aids Day 1995/the Hysteria Trust for HIV research and awareness at the London Astoria, November, 1995. Eddie appeared alongside fellow comedians Lenny Henry, Julian Clary, Alan Davies, Rich Hall, Jim Owen, Jenny Eclair, Steve Coogan and Jeremy Hardy. The Big Snog was transmitted on Channel 4 in November 1995.

ROCK THE VOTE

the campaign set up to get young people voting for the UK's General Election was launched on April 10th 1996. Eddie took part in the 7 comedy gigs around the UK between 10th and 21st April at the Shepherds Bush Empire, the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, Sunderland Empire, Bristol Colston Hall, Liverpool Royal Court and Southampton Guildhall. Jo Brand, Steve Coogan, Lee and Herring, Harry Hill, Donna McPhail, and bands M People and Radiohead also took part in the shows. A recording was made (on CD and cassette), each one containing a freepost registration card to enable young people to register to vote, whatever their circumstances. The cards were also available at each of the concerts.

THE CAMPAiGN TO FREE DANNY MCNAMEE

a benefit for the Irish political prisoner, Gilbert 'Danny' McNamee, on 17th December, 1996, at the Clapham Grand. Mark Steel, Sean Hughes, Jeremy Hardy, Mark Thomas and Rob Newman also took part in this controversial show.

THE DiRTY THREE AND A HALF DOZEN/WHAT'S UP DOCKERS

Eddie took part in this benefit in aid of the Liverpool Dockers at the London Palladium on Sunday 16th March 1997. Other comedians involved included Julian Clary, Rob Newman, Steve Coogan, Alan Davies, Alan Davies, Sean Hughes, Kevin Day and Alistair McGowan. A televised version of the event was shown on Channel 4 on 2nd May 1997, and featured Julian Clary talking with the women who supported the Dockers during the 18 months they had been out of work.

COMiC RELiEF 8

In the summer of 1998, Eddie took part in the US Comic Relief 8 event. Hosted Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, Eddie appeared alongside Paul Rodriguez, Ray Romano, Chris Rock, Dennis Miller, Rosie O'Donnell, Rosie Perex, Sarah Jessica Parker, Liam Neeson, Katie Couric, Matt Lauer and Jason Alexander. Recorded at New York's Radio City Music Hall, the event was broadcast by HBO.

HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE

In 1999, Eddie compered a tribute concert in memory of the late Linda McCartney, at the Royal Albert Hall, alongside other stars such as George Michael, Tom Jones and Chrissie Hynd, and which was subsequently televised by the BBC and HBO.
