Eddie's Documentary
29 Sep 2009
BELIEVE: THE EDDIE IZZARD STORY will be in theaters in the US opening October 9 in Los Angeles, and October 16 in New York.
'Believe' chronicles comedian Eddie Izzard¹s rise to fame from his early influences - losing his mother to cancer at a young age before being sent with his brother to boarding school to his close present day relationship with his supportive father.
At school, when he saw what getting into the Cambridge Footlights Revue could do for your career his goal became to follow Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson and try for a place at the University. When that didn't work out he headed to the Edinburgh Festival, equipped with nothing but a unicycle and some banter, eventually figuring out how to draw a crowd. He's been working hard at it ever since.
'Believe' is the mantra of Eddie Izzard: if you want to be a singer, you've got to believe you can sing, if you want to be a comedian you've got to believe you can be funny. Eddie believes in Eddie and it was this rock solid self-belief that allowed him to perform onstage as a transvestite when it was considered career suicide. When his highly successful West End show, Dressed To Kill won critical acclaim he had only himself to thank for booking the theatre.
Director Sarah Townsend skilfully combines home video, stills and archival footage in this intimate and edgy portrait of the performer.

Saw it last night in LA, and really enjoyed it. It answers lots of questions for those who are new to Eddieville, and fills in the details for those who've followed him long term. After the movie, he did a brief Q&A session of about 15 minutes or so. As always, he handled all sorts of questions from matter-of-fact, to emotional/psychological, to just plain weird with the utmost gentlemanly conduct...managing to leave us all giggling again. Well done. That's why we pay money to be close to you, babe.

I love Eddie Izzard, have bought every DVD I can get my hands on, encourage others to watch him. He is hysterical! We laugh until we cry. Even when I can't catch everything he says (he speaks so rapidly), his every expression, movement, sound, is so entertaining! I could watch him all day without sound. He is so brilliant, nobody can compare as an entertainer. I never thought I would be a fan of anyone but the Dalai Lama. But I am in love........
