Eddie Izzard performs for Nelson Mandela’s 46664 campaign in South Africa

12 Jan 2010

Eddie Izzard has been hailed as one of the foremost Stand-Ups of this generation. His latest stand up show Stripped has broken all box records with sell out arena shows across the UK, US and Europe. This January Eddie will join an elite group of performers when he becomes the fourth ever comedian to play New York's prestigious Madison Square Garden.

Now 46664 and Real Concerts are thrilled to welcome Eddie Izzard to South Africa, where he will be performing for five nights, to help raise funds for the ongoing work of the Nelson Mandela charitable organizations.

Performances take place on 2 and 3 February 2010 at The Mandela Theatre - The Johannesburg Theatre in Johannesburg; on 4 and 5 February in Cape Town at the ICC Auditorium 1 and on 6 February at Durban ICC in Hall 1 AB.

February 11th 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela walking free from his 27 years incarceration. This historic world event was the foundation that brought freedom to a country that was once segregated and full of turmoil. It is because of this hugely significant moment that South Africa is now able to welcome many global, cultural and entertaining events.

''Eddie Izzard explains ³I am delighted to have this opportunity to perform in South Africa to help raise funds for Nelson Mandela¹s charities. It is because of this iconic world leader that I have the privilege of performing my show to a live audience in what is now a free country and at a very significant time in the country¹s history.””

Tim Massey, International Director of 46664 says “By using the universal language of sport, music and entertainment we can deliver messages of care, prevention and hope to the youth and young adults of the world. This is the first time we will be partnering with comedy and we are delighted and extremely grateful that Eddie accepted our invitation to come and perform in South Africa. We hope this will be the first of many more 46664 comedy events to come.”

A dream come true. Have been so envious of those in Europe and US and now it's our chance to have the benefit of his great brain and wit. Can't wait - it's going to be fantabulous I just know it. x

Unfortunantly, us younger plebs in SA can't be there due to financial issues, even though we would quite litterally, sell a kidney to get a ticket. But we DO have a flag!! We adore you Eddie!

Thank you so much for coming to see us and for helping towards an awesome cause. Looking forward to seeing you and I'm really excited for the show. Eddie, you're fantabulous!

It is true that we're very excited to have Eddie on our shores, I am sure he'll be blown away by Cape Town [probably buy a pad in Camps Bay] but unfortunately the cost of the tickets is prohibitive for most. A night out, including drinks and a meal, for decent tickets will cost over R2,000. This is simply out of reach of the average South African. For those going enjoy!! I am really disappointed, isnt it sad when sensibility prevails?

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Eddie, have enjoyed so many of his gigs in London and have spent much of the last 3 years living in SA wishing he would come and perform here. Imagine my extreme excitement on hearing that he's about to! But very perturbed that the ticket prices are so ridiculous, well out of the reach of the pockets of most current fans here and unlikely to enable new fans to discover him. I've just read on this website that Eddie wants to keep UK tickets to 35 pounds max, so why allow SA prices to be so high, even for charity? Am very sad...

maestro, it appears that the bulk of the ticket intake will go to charity and eddie must eat a little too, no? sell your surfboard and get a ticket. a cunningly clever mind mingled with a delectable dose of restrained but perfect mimicry is simply not to be missed. we've been waiting for this lizzard like some humans wait for a messiahhhhh. good heavens, i'm even becoming sentimental!

22 Jan 2010 - 11:59 GMT

I was at your St Louis event at the Fox Theater. Me my husband, my two children and their husbands and their friends were all blown away. It was thrilling. Wanted you to know that a worker there at the Fox was commenting on your show as we were leaving. She looked like an old sunday school teacher with her hair bunged up tight and about 60yrs old. She said "he made fun of god and they all just laughed!!". I almost stopped to explain it to her, but decided. Naaaaa, she'd never understand. Great luck to you Eddie. We love you here in Missouri. KUDOS!

01 Feb 2010 - 11:42 GMT

I've decided you're cooler than George Clooney now, better looking, and feck-all more interesting! If you lived down the street from me you could spend the night and we could do each other's hair and make-up! It'd be great fun! Wanna do it? = )

02 Feb 2010 - 05:16 GMT
