'Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story'

'Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story'

12 Nov 2010

Director Sarah Townsend revisits his remarkable life by weaving a multi-layered tapestry around Eddie’s own confessions to the camera. Insights come from charming childhood home movies, enlightening vintage street-comedy footage, and friend/celebrity interviews including Robin Williams and George Clooney.

There’s also Eddie’s father, whose career took the family from Yemen to Northern Ireland amid “the troubles,” now musing on the impact of those moves (and on his son’s youthful fascination with his mother’s stockings).

And ultimately, there’s the openness of Izzard himself. He frankly ponders past paths, and even confronts the comedy truth-in-advertising controversy that demoralized him into a three-year retreat from his free-associating stage comedy.

Believe: The Eddie Izzard Story is a fantastic documentary giving an incredibly moving portrait of one of the most celebrated artists of our time.

Can't wait to see this film. It's been too long since my last Eddie fix.

I just got done watching this a few minutes ago. I absolutely loved the film. I thought that it was charming and insightful. I related to the story as I myself have had dreams and have had people tell me that I was crap at something and years later I am acheiving my dreams and becoming the person I always thought that I could be. Even though it took me a long time to get here. It took me a while to believe that I could.

My wish is to see Eddie in Poland! Since I watched my first Eddie Izzard's stand-up I've been never the same again:) I laugh so hard I started to see a tunel at the end of which someone asked me: cake or death, dear? :) Poland loves Eddie Izzard!

Always loved Eddie, - what great and unique stand up. I hadn' appreciated how much of a struggle it was for him to make it- so glad he did! Please tell us when Eddie is in England next as i am desperate to go and see him.

Just watched Believe!! Love it! I am going to have my son watch it as well. He is almost 13 and has manic depressive disorder as well as ADHD. I thought your story so inspirational that I hope my son will learn a lesson or two as I have. I usually do not let my son listen to things with cursing (i like to pretend my sweet boy does not know or use such word LOL!), but I broke down and let him watch Death Star Canteen. He laughed so hard he almost wet himself!!! Anyway, my son thinks you are brilliantly funny and could not believe that someone with so much talent and success could also have so much self doubt. He also needs to BELIEVE!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing your story with us all. You are a brilliant talent. I am so glad you did not quit when you did not make your '25 years old' deadline. OH!! And I watched The Riches faithfully and was devistated when it ended. Love you, thank you and cannot wait for more!!!!!

I loved Believe, I loved Eddie's 'Believe' message, and I love the strength Eddie has shown to come into his art, and to be true to who he is and a shining beacon to people of all nations and throughout the gender spectrum.
