Subject: Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 01:22 BST She reveals:
"For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being "Christian" or to being part of Christianity. It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten …years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else. As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of …Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen." WELL SAID! |

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 05:14 BST When I found out that I was not a Christian I said something like that but not as well put. Do I believe in Christ and God...maybe but I don't believe in or want to be put into the same group as his followers.

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 06:07 BST I find that to be one of the major differences between the lions share of main stream Christian based religions in the U.S. as opposed to other places in the world.
I went to my boyfriend's brother's wedding this past December. In one of the "fly over" states. It was an experience. Closest I ever got to a church service, it freaked me out how -- how -- (I have no idea what I'm trying to say here. :/) I got the feeling that most people there took it all pretty literally. No shades of grey. They tend to be most or all of what Anne said in her statement. The church I grew up at has a really moderate view point of the bible and all of that stuff. Oh hell, here's the wiki page instead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Church_of_Canada#Beliefs_and_Practices R.I.P. Bob Probert 5 June 1965-5 July 2010 Peace |

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 07:18 BST The sad truth that Christians don't want to admit is that Atheists simply are the best people on the planet. They use more of their brains than Christians do, they work harder, they're smarter, they're more attractive, and they're just better salt of the earth down home people who have a strong connection with reality as observable around us and provable in an empirical way. They want to act like they're the ones being persecuted and use ridiculous arguments to try to prove it when they're the biggest religion in the world and in fact, they do the second most persecuting in the world behind Islam, of course, the most problematic religion we have on our hands today.

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 13:31 BST Quote from 'Moxie in Vermont' Yup. That's the one I went to after my dad was kicked out of the Anglican church when I was 6. I mentioned the reason in another thread somewhere. :/ No wonder I'm atheist. We had 6 different ministers in 8 years. Although 3 of them were interim ministers. Their stints all totalled would equal about a year, if that. R.I.P. Bob Probert 5 June 1965-5 July 2010 Peace |

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 13:36 BST Quote from 'Blatherskite, The Hasidic Tiger Jew (whose best friend is Jazz Chicken)' Atheists are not necessarily "the best people" on the planet. As Eddie himself has said, there are religious people who have done a lot of good in the world. I'd post a longer response but work beckons. >_< R.I.P. Bob Probert 5 June 1965-5 July 2010 Peace |

Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 16:22 BST Years ago, I also quit being part of the Christianity that is so narrow and self-empowering. I never really was part of them. At 10, I knew every Sunday morning, that singing '"Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty, God in three persons, Holy Trinity" was blasphemy. I remain committed to G-d and will always be. It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. My conscience will allow nothing else.
I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. I agrree with Anne, but I don't worship Jesus of Nazareth. In describing the 'Christians' I would also add the word 'entitlement".. I've never seen a greedier group of people who feel the world owes them instead of them owing the world. Anne needs to go a bit further in her new quest and begin to advocate repair of the damage caused by those persons of entitlement who make up Christianity. Thanks Zingera for a thoughtful post! |

~~~~~~~~~~~ www.suzannebronson.com ~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~ www.coloradopoetscenter.org/poets/bronson_suzanne/index.html ~~~~~~ I've been very fortunate to know individuals to whom I would consider pious Most have been of the Christian faith - a few Hebrew, Native American, Muslim But those people are few and far between I find I am distancing myself from any and all organized religions because they are continually telling me To 'hate' people just because a leader tells me to And that I must hand over my money and become part of their congregation Well done to Anne Rice and thanks Zing for posting it |
Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 30 Jul 2010 - 23:43 BST TT, any Christian who is good is good by justification from Biblical passages. It's true. But you have to remember that any Christian who is evil is also evil by justification from Biblical passages. The Bible is written across multitudes of times and peoples and is so all-encompassing that one can justify almost any way of life from its pages. That being said, The Bible actually disappears and implodes into its own contradictions such that all moral bases are eradicated and thus blame for what each individual does is put solely where it belongs: on the individual.
BUT, if you take all the good and all the evil committed by Christians and are somehow able to quantify it on a chart perhaps through a percentile representation or better yet, a ratio represenation, then I can almost guarantee you that the ratio of evil to not evil is much higher in Christians than in Atheists and still higher if other religions are counted (up to and including the spiritual necrocracy that is North Korea, a joke by any measure). http://www.facebook.com/madbenji |
Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 31 Jul 2010 - 01:14 BST Quote from 'Blatherskite, The Hasidic Tiger Jew (whose best friend is Jazz Chicken)' No offense intended, but the whole "we are better than you are" attitude just fuels the fire....there are good people in every faith race, creed and color. How we live our lives and how we treat eachother is more important than who or what we do or do not "follow". Defend your beliefs if necessary but some of your response..which is valid in some points....mostly comes across as arrogant. Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 31 Jul 2010 - 01:34 BST Zingera, if you're combing the article for arrogance, then you're sure to find it. Congratulations, dip sh*t. If you're looking for pretention then congratulations, you will find that too. Nice job, dip sh*t. If you want to look for conceit, then you shouldn't have any trouble finding that either. Way to go, dip sh*t. You see, people's minds reshape themselves around the realities they think they perceive and what you may want to come off as objective actually comes off as subjective.
Worse, however, it's completely off point. You see, I'm an evolved and intelligent individual and I don't care about emotion-based criteria. Period. I don't care if it goes for or against my point so long as I'm right- which I am. But I can see your point, you know? I really do sound arrogant. So let me produce what could be perceived as a more humble formulation: Excuse me, Mr. Religious Fanatic, but I may suggest that it's a possibility that I might want some more. I mean, golly gee, you know. We're simpler folks out here. We really appreciate your contrived, outdated- excuse me, FOLKSY and WHIMSICAL explanations for scientific phenomena. I mean why would anybody believe the earth was more than 4,000 years old when all they have to prove it are facts and empirically tested data backed up and reinforced through repetition down all lines of the scientific method... I mean, come on! Why would you consult all of that data when you could just read a couple of verses out of an old tome that might as well be translated from ancient runes and carries no more relevance in today's modern world than that rambling hobo outside of Dunkin Donuts who promises the world's going to end soon. Shame on you for even thinking about arrogance. You know, I bet there could be a robot out there and the robot is programmed for truth. It says, "God does not exist." You'd be chiding the robot for being arrogant. It replies, "But I am not programmed for arrogance... error... error..." http://www.facebook.com/madbenji |
Subject: Re:Author Anne Rice speaks.... Posted: 02 Aug 2010 - 02:27 BST F**king drama queen. I don't presume to know sh*t about you. "your reply speaks volumes about you...have a nice life." And now really isn't the time to break out the platitudes. Cheer up! When you smile, the world smiles with you. Blah blah blah. We can play that game, though. Your avatar says a lot about you. You like peanuts and woodstock in particular for example. That is all I would presume to know about you.
