Sorry to repeat, I just figured out how to start a new thread!

Anybody else out there in the NYC/NJ area?

I just moved to NJ (live on the Hudson directly across from Manhattan) and, wouldn't you know it, the husband is out of the county!

I've been pretty stoic about it all and proactive getting ready. I have to confess now: I'm kind of freaking out! I REALLY need to stop watching The Weather Channel because all this talk of the storm being epic and unprecedented isn't soothing my nerves!

I'm sure we'll all get through it but this is my first hurricane and I guess I was just saving myself for a doozy!

My friends out of the city are freaking out about hearing about the transit system being halted, but they did this for Irene last year because it takes about 7 hours to get trains out of harms way and prep to get the water out of the tunnels if they do flood. It was a great success during Irene.

A couple years ago a freak rainstorm halted the entire system and it pissed a bunch of folks off, rightly so, and bloomberg keeps making it better and better as the years go by.

And as I tell my friends, keep informed, but don't keep the news on, even if the hype is real, I don't think information is helpful when it freaks you out.

While you have power look up where your evacuation centers are online..

My boss has already told us not to bother coming in on Monday or Tuesday.

Just hang tight....good luck....

You're right about not watching the news excessively! I quit for a while to bake cupcakes and then take a bath (while I still have hot water!).

I just heard they have a voluntary evacuation for my area in Edgewater but I'm not sure it really applies to me as I'm on the 2nd floor of a condo building. This is a first for me so it's confusing as to what to do.

In the end, I hope I'm just overreacting! At least I don't live down on the Jersey Shore which would be way worse so I'll try to keep it in perspective.

Thanks for all the info - you must live in NYC. I think this is so different from Irene (from what I hear) that it's worthless to compare. Hope you don't live in the Battery Park area!

I live in the highest point of Manhattan...and on the fifth floor of a walk-up so I am pretty good here ( unless something happens to the roof..lol.) They covered all our electric stuff with sandbags at intersections as early as Saturday morning in my neighborhood. The stores still had plenty flashlights and canned foods and batteries late this afternoon. I felt like I was the only one prepping. Lots of folks just carrying one gallon of water.

I am more concerned about you because you live near the water. It looks like it's gong to be pretty quiet until the afternoon tomorrow, and tomorrow night will be the havoc, as well Tuesday night....

Have a bag ready with all your papers and stuff, incase the mandatory evacuations are called. I went through a fire in my building this year. Nothing beats being quick on your feet and being prepared.

And you could not be around a better group of folks. Since 9/11 no one in NJ or NY treats anyone as a stranger when there is doom ahead. So don;t think you are gong through this alone, your neighborhood will be there for you.

Thinking about everyone in the area. The preparation seems good, your emergency facilities are used to dealing with things - just take the advice your given and remember you matter more than any possessions. I'm sure there will be inconvenience, but hopefully if people follow the advice, everyone will stay safe. And when it's over, you'll still be living in a great part of the world.

The Hudson's looking like you could surf on it and we're still 9 hours or more away from the worst!

I have to confess I'm nervous about the water situation although it won't reach my condo on the 2nd floor (at least I don't think so - LOL).

I will definitely get some important things together just in case so thanks for reminding me of that.

I hope all goes well for everyone.

Vespa, nature moves quickly, even though you are the second floor, please take any mandatory info seriously..

When the fire happened on the ground floor, by the time I ran downstairs to safety, smoke and serious damage had hit the 5th floor--- luckily my apartment was spared, but it opened my eyes of how quickly this stuff moves..

Don't think that water can't get that high -- anything can go wrong and reach you very quickly. They already closed down bridges and tunnels, and the Tappanzee bridge will remain open until winds hit 65 miles...

e-mail me at wednesday412@yahoo.com if you need any help or reassurance via the web. It is an awful thing to go through this alone, but you are not...lots of folks are out there ready to help you even if it's through the web...

That's a walkway under water in batter park, and the worst of the storm has not even hit yet....and yes that is the statue of liberty in the background of the first pic...

Even being on the 2nd floor isn't safe. If the first floor completely floods how will you get out? Your building will become inhabitable if it does flood severely.

I would head for the hills if I were you. With the Hunter Moon tonight the tides will be even higher bringing more water. My aunt and cousin were living in Louisiana during Katrina. They lived on the 2nd floor in a condo bldg. They lost almost all their stuff and ended up moving to Kentucky. My aunt said she would never go back as it is a horrific thing to go through.

Stay safe everyone! Where is Noah when you really need him?

How about a check-in of the Blatheren that are on the East Coast so that we can rest assured that you are all okay...

Just an F.Y.I....those hurricane winds have reached us here near Chicago. We are supposed to have winds as high as 50MPH and they are warning people to stay away from Lake Shore Drive.

Thank you all for your concern about us affected by Sandy.

I live near where much of the unbelievable destruction took place. Very fortunately my area was spared significant damage - power lines down, 2 trees down the block uprooted and chunks of cement pulled from the sidewalk - otherwise a big bunch of leaves, branches and twigs in the street.

The 80+ mph winds were extremely noisy and a bit scary at times - but that's nothing compared to what others faced.

I've been going to one of the beach areas severely hit for several years now. Hard to fathom it no longer exists, and the destruction all around. Seems like Mother Earth was doing part of Her cleansing here.

It's very comforting to know that people out there care!

Thank you!

Vespa - how are you?? Please check in!

Hello,
To be brief & not that anyone cares (well, I do know that some did) but in my current situation, we've had power out, no gas/heat/hot water up until Friday night, when we got it back on.

I was down at my parent's home in southern NJ taking care of their needs. (I try to drive down weekly which is 2 hours one-way from where I live in central NJ). The Hurricane hit but thankfully, nothing was damaged & they're doing ok. My other 3 brothers & 1 sister (who also lives somewhat locally) were all spared damages & no health problems.

All in all, if just a little "inconvenience" of losing utilities is all we lost then, that is obviously surely nothing to the 23 people who've perished (so far). RIP to the victims and peace to their families.

Anyway, I'd like to say a small gesture of thanks to some of members here on this forum who did write to me on my FB page asking how I made-out during this horrific tragedy. Thanks to Eddie for posting his FB page thinking about us, that's a quality-man. Likewise, it was really cool of NBC on Friday night doing that last minute telethon where some stars made moving tributes.

Bottom line too, I wish everyone who is still in the process of rebuilding, you WILL prevail & to never give-up. Peace to you all. If you ever you know, just want to talk or vent, I'm available & will listen.

Cheers & <3, E.
